What if you could raise chickens without any grain or feed from a store? It sounds a little crazy at first, but when you really start to think about it, chickens in the wild have survived all this time without one single trip to the feed and seed.

Yes, I know there are lots of differences, chickens in the wild aren’t trying to grow big and fast. Still, I think there is something here. Let me introduce you to comfrey 🌱 .

It’s Good For The Soil

The roots of comfrey are great for breaking up heavily compacted soil creating space for air and water in the soil. It can also be used as a natural fertilizer for other plants in your garden.

It’s Good For The Animals

Comfrey is high in protein, low in fiber (chickens don’t digest fiber very easily), and full of minerals. On top of that, because I am growing it here, I know that it will be 100% pesticide-free.

It’s Good For The Community

Feeding or animals food grown here on the farm provides the best transparency for our customers. When we use a “no input” system (where everything comes straight from the farm and nowhere else) we can assure them that they are getting the highest quality food.  And there is no carbon footprint!

If it is good for the SOIL, good for the ANIMALS, and good for the COMMUNITY: it’s good for us.  That is always our goal here at the farm which is the driving force behind regenerative farming. Healthier animals mean more nutritious protein for us to eat, allowing us to provide you with high-quality farm-to-table food.

Our Journey To Raising Grain-Free Chickens

We will keep you updated on our journey to “grain-free” chickens.  We are always learning and growing here at the farm. Our focus is always to serve the LAND, the ANIMALS, and our COMMUNITY.

If you’d like to come to visit the farm, check our Events Calendar for upcoming Farm Tour Dates.

No experience necessary,

Kelly

Side note: some varieties of comfrey are extremely invasive and can take over your yard. We use the “bocking 14” variety.
