Do you remember when meat subscriptions weren’t a thing? For most of us, this was an unknown phenomenon before 2020. Technically, Butcher Box has been around since 2015, but the push for the convenience of food at your door and the bare shelves in grocery stores have skyrocketed the meat delivery service industry. Keep reading to learn how you can take advantage of local farmers’ meat subscriptions.
Innovation Meets Sustainable Agriculture
As a business coach and owner/operator of a farm, I always encourage my clients (and ourselves) to find new ways to get more products into customers’ hands. This is innovation at its finest.
Meat box deliveries are a win for customers (like you) and a few big companies with massive marketing budgets, but what if there was a way to get the same great convenience and support your LOCAL ECONOMY and the environment (you knew I was going to go there) all at the same time?
Supporting Local Economy with Meat Subscriptions
Have you looked in your area to find a meat subscription from a local farm? If you look hard enough, you can find one where you live!
Our Buyer’s Club, like most innovative ideas, was created out of a desperate need to bring in revenue during the farmer’s market “off-season”. As a family that was transitioning to full-time farming, we had to find ways to make money in the winter. We had freezers full of regeneratively raised meat and nowhere to sell it. When we looked around, we had many friends who were farmers and artisans struggling with the same problem. We saw a need for our customers to get those farmer’s market items (not just meat) and a need for our vendor friends and us to make money when the markets weren’t open. And that’s how our subscription started.
How To Support Your Local Farmers and Artisans
If you are thinking of having great food delivered to your door, ask around at your local farmers’ market and see if some of your favorite vendors offer their own subscriptions. If they don’t, maybe they can start?
Hampton Roads friends can participate in our Buyer’s Club, and our friends at Commons Provisions serve all of Virginia’s local and verified regenerative meats.
