And just like there I mark one more thing off my grocery list, that I don’t have to make myself. I’ve handed over the reins to our daughter and in this article, we are sharing with you our secret 3-ingredient bread recipe.

The control freak in me

Many hands make light work… I’ve been told this since I was a child, but the “control freak” in me has always tried to do “all of the things” when it comes to cooking for my family. I want to say I am a little wiser now, but the truth is I just ran out of time. As a business coach, I am always helping clients “leverage” other people to do things that don’t require their skill set, and I FINALLY took my own advice and got one of the kids to start making bread for our family.

Our in-house dough pro

Sophie is the self-proclaimed “dough pro” at What The Farm. She started with a very basic (no-knead, 3 ingredient) recipe that she lovingly calls the “Soph-a-Loaf” (yep, she is ALL mine, lol). For 28 cents (we figured the exact amount in #farmschool) she makes a delicious loaf of bread that everyone devours. And now there’s one more item marked off my grocery list, that I don’t have to make myself. That’s a win-win in my book.

Bread Recipe

“The Soph-a-Loaf” Recipe

3 cups All-Purpose Flour
1 ½ tsp salt
1 tsp yeast
1 ½ cups lukewarm water

INSTRUCTIONS
Combine the three dry ingredients in a large bowl. Pour in the luke-warm water (temperature should be 120°F – 130°F) and stir until completely combined.

Once combined, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap or set a towel over the bowl; let sit on the counter for 2 hours.
When the dough is done rising and ready to bake, preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

Stick a 6-quart dutch oven (or similar) in the oven for about 30 minutes to heat.

Flour the parchment paper (it should be big enough to hold the sides and carefully drop into the dutch oven). Dump the dough onto the parchment paper and shape it into a round ball. There is no need to knead (yes, we have jokes).

After the dutch oven has preheated, take the dutch oven out CAREFULLY with some oven mitts or hot pads. Note handles will be extremely HOT!

Place the ball of dough in the dutch oven and cover with a lid.

Bake at 450 degrees F for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 minutes until your Soph-a-Loaf is golden brown.

2 things that make this bread recipe work

What makes this recipe so easy? 2 things come to mind… #1 the DUTCH OVEN. You preheat it for 30 minutes before you put the dough in, and it comes out perfect! #2 PARCHMENT PAPER. The original recipe didn’t call for using parchment paper, but we found it makes bringing the bread from the counter to the hot pan (and then taking the baked loaf out of the pan) so much easier! It also makes clean up faster!

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

No Experience Necessary,
Kelly & Sophie
